Wood Chips

The Iberia Bioenergy’s Biomass Trading Desk can get is able to secure more than 100.000 tonnes per year of biomass accross the World and our Origination business unit can collect more than 5.000 tonnes per month from own forest assets or public/private forest farms.

We trade Wood Chips Standard  EN 14961 for European Market by chipping (cutting the wood into pieces with a knife). In Northern Europe moisture of the freshly cut pine wood chips is about 43-45%,while 28-30% in South Europe Mediterranean Area. In energy content the chips will be 9,20 GJ per metric tonne with 45% moisture, and 12,5 GJ per metric tonne with 28% moisture. Bulk density of the wood chips  is very low, only about 250-440 kg per metric tonne depending on the moisture content. An optimized trimming may increase the weight of the wood chips cargo by 20%.

  • Traded biomass species from Southem Europe (Mediterranean Sea) : Pine Sp. (pinea, pinaster , halepensis,  sylvestis) , Eucalyptus Sp. (rostrata, nitens), Poplar Sp. (populus Nigra ).
  • Traded biomass species from Northern Europe (Balctic Sea): Pine Sp. (radiata & sylvestis ), Spruce, Birch and Alder.
  • Traded biomass species from America : Eucalyptus Sp. (eucalyptus grandis & urograndis)
  • Traded biomass species from Africa: Eucalyptus Sp. (eucalyptus grandis & urograndi), Accia and Rubber Wood.


Agro-Biomass Chips

Agro-Biomass wood chips which have already been tested are been mainly sourcing from Mediterranean countries such as Spain and collected  from olive and vine pruning trees, fruit trees and citrus trees. After a precise harvesting and sieving process, these raw materials need two chipping stages to be fully refined to provide the highest quality standard and to avoid foreign materials which are responsible for the slagging process during the burning stage.

Spainish and Italians players are pioneers in burning this kind of agro-biomass, with  lower recognized prices and a huge potential of origination   >1.000.000 metric tonnes per year which allows securing long term contracts.



Wood Pellets

Iberia Bioenergy trades wood pellets coming from sustainable and controlled sources. The main raw materials are low-grade wood fiber, tops and limbs, commercial thinning and mills residuos.

Industrial Wood Pellet

According to International Industrial Wood Pellets specification there are 3 different types of pellets : I1, I2 and I3.

Iberia Bioenergy has long-term agreements in place with a number of high-quality suppliers for about  100.000 metric tonnes per year of I2 wood pellets. We trade industrial wood  pellets with ash content below 1, 5%, average NCV >17 GJ/tonne and having special control over particle size distribution (square hole sieves ) always in compliance buyer needs, .

We have vast resources to draw on with regard to production, warehousing and distribution. And with the central Biomass HUB in Ferrol – Spain, our security of supply is unrivalled. We are reliable, whether you require a single truck or an entire shipload.

Residential Wood Pellets

Residential Wood pellets are a standardized fuel. Iberia Bioenergy trades high-level Premium Pellets, which are DINplus and/or ENplus A1 certified. They can be transported in containers in big bags or even in bulk. These pellets are ideally suited for small firing systems.

Residential wood pellets  specification  used for private heating must have ash content below 0,7% ( A1 quality), mechanical durability of 97,5%. The Colour of pellets depends on the sort of tree from which they are made and should not influence their NCV, also the factor influencing the colour of the pellets is the dryer.

Iberia Bioenergy trades white pellets into the Italian market, reaching the esthetical specifications which are requested by local users.


Agro-Industrial Pellets

Iberia Bioenergy through its wide biomass sourcing net is providing alternative solutions for Biomass Power Producers. Specially from the Black and Mediterranean Seas, we are able to secure long-term or spot orders of theses materials, once they meet fully the customer quality requirements.

  • Husk Sunflower Pellets: HSP can be definitely used in biomass dedicated power plants and also for co firing with coal. Their NCV is close to the NCV of wood pellets, being 17,-17,6 GJ per mt . Ash content is around of 2,6-3,0%.  Ukranian pellets are usually of higher quality than the Russians. Iberia Bioenergy has long-term agreements in place with a number of high-quality suppliers for around  50.000 metric tonnes per year Black Sea Origin.
  • Sugar Beet Pulp Pellets: SBPP with a moisture avrage content of the sugar beet pellets is 11%, ash content 3,1%, NCV 14,63 GJ per metric tonne, durability 94,7% ,Sulphur 0,10%,Chlorine 0,01% and Nitrogen 1,5%. Iberia Bioenergy has long-term agreements in place with a number of high-quality suppliers for about  30.000 metric tonnes per year.


  • Wheat Straw Pellets: Iberia Bioenergy is able to secure long-term agreements  with a number of high-quality suppliers for about 50.000 Tonnes per year of Straw Pellets, Spanish Origin. Mosture average content is about 11%, ash content 6%, NCV 13,50 GJ per metric and Sulphur 0,22%.
  • Olive Cake Pellets : They have relatively high ash content ( 6-8%)  and NCV between 15-16 GJ per metric . Olive cake pellets  are mainly produced in Spain and Tunesia , we are able to have long-term agremements in place with a number of suppliers for about 60.000 Tonnes per year.



Biomass Agro-Waste Based



  • Derivated from Olive Oil Industry: The Olive Tree’s crop surface in Andalusia (Spain) is approximately  800.000 Ha. These kind of biomass come from season crop products. The crop usually starts in December/January and ends in  March/April. Mediterranean countries like Tunisia and Spain are important exporters of these kind of biomass.
    • Olive Cake : With a average moisture of about 13-14%,ash content  7-8% and NCV about 15,5-16 GJ per metric tonne. Iberia Bioenergy has long-term agreements in place with a number suppliers for about 80.000 Tonnes per year, according the availability per annual crop.
    • Olive Stones:  Ash content on the level of 3-4%, and average moisture of about 30% for fresh material , this material is very appreciated for local users who are burning into small boilers due to their homogeneity and good properties biofuel. Iberia Bioenergy able to secure   long-term agreements for circa of 30.000 tonnes per year, according availability per annual crop.


  • Derivates from the Almond  Industry: The almond trees crops are mainly agglutinated in Spain and Tunisia. These kind of biomass come from season crop products.
    • Almond Shells:  With a moisture average content of about 12,45%, ash  1,37% , NCV 15,54 GJ per metric tonne, sulphur for about 0,05%, and Chlorine 0,011%. Iberia Bioenergy has long-term agreements in place with a number supplier for circa of 20.000 Tonner per year, according availability per annual crop.
  • Derivates from the  Palm Oil Industry: Biomass come from the agricultural sector of  South East Asia (Malaysia and Indonesia) and West Africa ( Ghana, Togo and Nigeria ) origins.
    • Palm kernel Shells : PKS is crushed into the  particles of  10-20 mm in size. This biomass have moisture content of about 11-12%, ash content  2%, chlorine 0,05%,  sulphur  0,13% and Net calorific value is approx. 17,25 GJ per metric tonne. Iberia Bioenergy can offer long term contracts of Pks for volumes of 50.000 metric tonnes per year .

Several different production technologies have been developed to convert biomass into heat and electricity. The different methods of refining biomass are under constant development and many new biomass have been tested.
